Ganesh Chaturthi (also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi) is a festival of the Hindus celebrated in honour of Ganesh — the elephant-headed god. Lord Ganesha is also known as Vighnaharta – conqueror of obstacles. With his blessings, this lord of beginnings and remover of obstacles, ensures that any new project or endeavour runs smoothly, bringing us wealth, prosperity and success.

Celebrations and the traditional prayers are conducted on the fourth day of the second fortnight (Shukla Chaturthi) in the month of Bhadrapada in the Hindu calendar— usually August or September. The festival generally lasts ten days, ending on the fourteenth day of the fortnight (Anant Chaturdashi).

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated throughout India, especially in states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. In Maharashtra, the celebrations are grand, complete with the traditional musical instruments called dhol and tasha. Although, less prominently, the festival is also celebrated in other Indian regions like Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and other southern and western regions. Abroad, Ganesh Chaturthi is observed in the Terai region of Nepal and by the Hindu diaspora in the United States, Canada and Mauritius.
